EUSA 2024-25 Magazine published

The European University Sports Association (EUSA) has released the latest edition of its annual publication—the EUSA Year Magazine 2024-25—providing a comprehensive recap of the European Universities Games 2024 and highlighting various events and projects.

This edition offers an in-depth overview of EUSA’s flagship competitions, along with other key activities undertaken throughout the year. Readers will find a welcome message from the EUSA President, as well as updated details on the organization’s structure, including its member associations, Executive Committee, Commissions, and Secretariat.

A significant portion of the magazine highlights the European Universities Games, held in Debrecen and Miskolc, Hungary, where thousands of student-athletes from across Europe came together to compete in a diverse range of sports. Alongside key insights and statistics, the magazine provides an in-depth overview of all 18 sports, offering a detailed look into the competitions.

A special highlight of the event was the EUSA 25th Anniversary Gala, celebrating a quarter-century of promoting university sports across Europe. The gala brought together key figures, athletes, and stakeholders to reflect on EUSA’s achievements and future vision, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity, excellence, and the development of university sports.

The magazine also presents detailed reports on a wide range of events, conventions, and meetings organized by EUSA over the past year, highlighting its ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue, collaboration, and engagement within the university sports community. It further showcases educational initiatives, leadership seminars, and EUSA-endorsed events carried out under EUSA’s patronage, all aimed at advancing university sports across Europe.

A special section honors the EUSA Awards, highlighting the exceptional contributions of individuals, universities, and associations to the development of European university sport. The magazine also delves into EUSA’s diverse projects, showcasing its efforts in key areas such as the Associated Members programme, Equal Opportunities, Fair Play, and Dual Careers. Furthermore, it features initiatives like the EUSA Volunteer Programme, the University Sport Exhibition, and the EUSA Club of Donors, demonstrating EUSA’s commitment to fostering engagement, inclusivity, and excellence in university sports.

Special attention is given to the International Day of University Sport (IDUS) and the European Week of Sport, held under the #BeActive campaign, promoting physical activity across Europe. Furthermore, the magazine introduces several EU-funded projects where EUSA is actively involved, either as a lead or partner. These include European Solidarity Corps (ESC), Erasmus+ Internship, Youth Integrity Ambassador Program (YIAP), Discovering university sport and supporting dual career (DiscoverU), Enhancing Sport Organizations and Management (ESOM), Fit4 Green, European Week of Winter Sports (EWWS), Youth Individual Sports Mindset (YouMind), Sports Clubs Integrating Organised Networks (FUSION), ERASMUS+ youth mobility and youth workers mobility projects.

The magazine also highlights notable events and accomplishments of EUSA members and partners, including the International University Sports Federation (FISU), continental university sports bodies from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania, as well as the European Commission, Council of Europe, European Non-Governmental Sports Organisation (ENGSO) & ENGSO Youth, European Fair Play Movement (EFPM), European Athlete as Student (EAS) network, and the European Handball Federation (EHF).

Looking ahead, the final chapter provides insights into upcoming future programme of EUSA events, including the European Universities Games 2026 in Salerno, European Universities Games 2028 in Split, European Universities Games 2030 in Granada, and an overview of the European Universities Championships 2025.

The EUSA Magazine is a free publication, supported by FISU and co-funded by the European Union. Printed copies will be distributed to EUSA members and partners, while the digital edition is available for reading and download online.

What's up! - Student Column
What's up! - Student Column

How working on the field improves young sports journalists

whatsup-aprilIn this month’s What’s up student column, Nejc Molan, a student of journalism and a sports journalist for the Slovenian Press Agency, shares his views and experiences on how young sports journalists learn more with on-field practical work than theoretical.

Even though I haven’t been working in sports journalism for long, I have been part of the Slovenian Press Agency for about three years now, the main thing I learned is that young, up-and-coming journalists learn best when being sent to events, games, press conferences, etc. Talking with other young sports reporters from around the world I’ve seen it works for them as well, but in this column, I would like to share some of my experiences.

This apparent preference of journalism students learning practical work rather than theory is already clearly drawn at our faculty. With the exception of the first year, journalism students quickly get to work writing different articles, getting sent to some events, and producing radio and TV programmes, while they are also being encouraged to find a student job in a newsroom alongside their studies. Things like that were the best part of my time at the faculty and have shown me what journalism is about. This continued at my first job and later at the press agency. While getting told what to do is a good first step, of course, the first time you must cover an event by yourself proves if you are able to do this job or not. For the first time you are alone, you have to find your way around and find the people with who you will talk with.

However, it looks like I am not the only one who thinks this is the best way to learn. AIPS and FISU have been doing Young Reporter programmes for years now, and I have been lucky enough to be selected to be a part of two of them. And while I did already cover events for STA, these two programmes helped me evolve into a journalist I am today. The first programme was in Innsbruck in 2023 at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships. Alongside five fellow young reporters from around the world during one week of competition, we had lectures about sports journalism, were reporting and writing articles for the AIPS website, doing interviews, but most importantly we learnt how to find a great story about the athletes or competition and not only focus about the results.

And while Innsbruck only covered a one sport event, in Torino 2025 I was part of six aspiring young reporters to cover the FISU World University Games Winter. In the two weeks of covering the event we’ve written event recaps, and feature stories and did TV interviews with the student-athletes. And for many doing these types of programmes this is their first time covering such a large multi-sport event. It’s like being at the mini-Olympics, where you have to find your way around different venues and work under tight deadlines. Although this wasn’t my first experience covering multi-sport events, it gave me an enormous amount of insight, skills, and connections to enhance my sports journalist career.

And to anyone reading this, practical learning and experience things on your own doesn’t only apply to sports reporting, but pretty much to everything.  So, the next time you get a job opportunity, an internship or whatever kind of programme to increase your knowledge and skills, don’t hesitate to go. Remember, you will learn how to swim best when you are thrown in the water.

This What's up column is written by Nejc Molan, a 25-year-old student of journalism at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana and currently a sports journalist for the Slovenian Press Agency.

Are you a student with an opinion? We are looking for new contributors for our student column every month. Feel free to contact stc@eusa.eu to offer a piece or propose a topic.
